8. Suzuki Alto 1.0 GA
Price: R106 100
The little Suzuki Alto is headlined by a couple of safety features: i.e. a pair of airbags and IsoFix child-seat anchors for the outer rear perches. The boot, however, can hold just 110 litres (although the rear bench does fold flat), which counts against it. Urge comes from a 50kW/87Nm 996cc three-cylinder, which bears a claimed economy of 5.7 litres per 100km. We'd suggest saving a little longer and springing for a Swift (see honourable mentions below).
9. Citroen C1 1.0i Attraction
Price: R117 900
The only French car on the list, the Citroen C1 is a chic little number. Its three-cylinder 50kW/93Nm engine sips at an impressive 4.3 litres per 100km, allowing it to dodge emissions taxes with a CO2 output of just 99g per kilometre. The boot, however, can hold just 139 litres. Standard kit is a little light (although safety is taken care of by ABS with EBD, brake assist and two airbags), with a number of features offered as optional extras. The new (more expensive) C1, however, has just arrived in SA so expect this model to fall from the list once stock runs out in the near future.
10. Chevrolet Spark 1.2 Campus
Price: R118 300
Yes, it's another Chevrolet Spark. But bear in mind that this is a completely different car to the Spark Lite mentioned above. The Campus — aimed squarely at, you guessed it, students — uses a perky 1.2-litre engine delivering 60kW and 108Nm while sipping just 5.4 litres per 100km. While its boot is small at 170 litres, it's one of the more solid efforts on this list. Standard features include ABS with EBD, two airbags, air-con, split-folding rear seat, IsoFix child-seat anchors, and a warranty spanning five years or 120 000km.
