It's not often that Roxy Louw can glide across a dancefloor, and no one notices. But then the blonde bombshell doesn't usually have quite such stiff competition for attention: dark, broody, lean yet curvaceous, crying out to have you wrap your legs around and ride all night. Meet Harley-Davidson's new Iron 883…
The planet's definitive motorcycle has a polished black and chrome retro feel to it in its latest guise, and got a stellar introduction to South Africa, courtesy of Cape Town's best connected duo. When Marina Nestel and Galia Kerbel throw a party (and provided you can get onto a closely guarded guest list), you know it'll be a night of glamour and celebrity, and a morning after of hazy memories and an extremely sore head. No exception here, as Rhodes Mandela Place gave the Iron 883 and the rest of the Dark Custom range, a maiden spin.
The celebrity legion was out in force, headlined by an unexpected touch of Hollywood: Billy Zane's in Cape Town, and the 'Titanic' star dropped in on the Harley party, leaving a starstruck wake, and producing this little gem. "Are those sweet or savoury?" he enquired of a waiter wielding a tray of meatballs. "Savoury, sir." "Sweet…". Zane rocked up with Colin Moss, headlining the Cape Town glitterati, who were out in force to drool over motorbikes.
Celebrity blogger Seth Rotherham — the bete noir of Idols judges Dave Thompson and Randall Abrahams — shot the breeze with KFM jock Richard Hardiman; Cokey Falkow, microphone in hand, hosted the evening; star stylist Perry Burke rocked up with artist Caro Alum (buy now, before she's really out of range); Roxy headlined a bevy of models on show; and then there was a rather decent band…
Prime Circle are in stellar form at the moment, one of a number of bands combining for a golden age in local music, and the bare industrial underground venue played off their music as much as it did the bikes on show. And while the bikes provided regular distraction, Prime Circle are hard to ignore when they hit their stride, and the smash hit 'She Always Gets What She Wants' had the Harleys purring appreciatively, Zane nodding in admiration, and a small but euphoric crowd belting out the chorus.
There was one brief Zimbabwean moment, when the power flickered off for a minute; when it came back on, a sheepish Roxy was trying to get the Iron 883 into her handbag; who could blame her. The rest of the Dark Custom range has undeniable appeal, but the 883, all wind in the hair James Dean escapism, has you smitten instantly. My mother would kill me if I got my hands on one, which only adds to the appeal, really.
Rotherham wrapped up the night with 2009's joke of the year so far ("they wanted to put on River Dance in Soweto, but Michael Flatley refused…"), just another highlight on a night of beautiful women, 'Titanic' stars, rock stars, and a drop dead gorgeous motorbike. Which, along with a guaranteed invitation to Marina and Galia's next party, is top of my current wishlist.
