Ananova.com reports that a motorcycle rider in Italy is appealing a court ruling that cost him his driver's licence after he was allegedly caught speeding at 612km/h - a sheer impossibility.

The man, Paolo Turina, who earned himself a R2576 fine, is claiming that the speed camera was clearly entirely defective and the charge against him should never have been brought to court.

"If I could go that fast I'd enter my bike in the MotoGP world championships. Valentino Rossi would not stand a chance. What did they think they were clocking - a jet fighter?" asked the 26-year-old Turina.

"If the court rules the fine will stand then I'm going to send it to the Guinness Book of Records - after all if the court says it's true then I should get the credit for this remarkable feat."

Police assured the camera was working perfectly but said it was possible that staff mess up the charge paperwork.

The appeal court has not yet made a decision on the case.
