What do Nissan and cellphones have in common? Technology from the Japanese vehicle manufacturer will makes its debut on cellphones across Japan.

Nissan has partnered with mobile services company NTT DoCoMo to supply cellphones coated with "Scratch Shield" paint.

The self-healing paint is used on certain Nissan vehicles around the globe and was commercially introduced in December, 2005.

The coating, which Nissan claims is a world first in paint technology, self-heals fine scratches and is capable of restoring painted surfaces overnight or up to a week's time in more severe cases.

The coating is also more scratch-resistant than conventional paint and provides durable and long-lasting coverage.

Nissan said it realized the paint is ideal for use on cellphones, which are susceptible to scratches in their daily use.

Other Nissan technologies that have been licenced for use in other industries include its around-view monitor and far infrared image sensor.
