Footage of a road rage incident in which a motorist repeatedly rams another vehicle and even smashes the windscreen with his bare hands has Australian drivers on edge.

The dramatic video — captured by a dash-camera — shows the pursuit and attack that took place in Queensland, near Logan. The footage was aired on TV show Today Tonight.

Former policeman Ken Olsen says that he was the victim of an "unprovoked attack". The drama started when Olsen merged into traffic and applied his brakes, causing the black Nissan Navara behind him to run into the back of his vehicle.

"Everything was fine, and the next thing I just got rear-ended. I looked up in my rear-vision mirror and there was a bloke gesturing and pulling signs at me, and going berserk," says Olsen.

The Navara driver then tries to run Olsen off the road.

"I had to go on to the footpath... I got onto the footpath and went over traffic islands with him in pursuit.

"I got around a traffic island, then he crunched into the side of me so I had to go onto another footpath to get away from him," he said.

Olsen eventually called emergency services: "He'd crashed into my vehicle so many times I was convinced it was going to stop going, and I thought once my vehicle is not going, I have no protection, this bloke is going to kill me,"

When the Nissan driver finally manages to box in Olsen, he exits his bakkie and throws himself onto Olsen's vehicle and punches his windscreen. Eventually, Olsen manages to drive and away to the nearest police station.
