Defending drivers world champion Lewis Hamilton was full of praise for the Silverstone crowd Sunday after finishing a distant 16th in the British Grand Prix.

The 24-year-old McLaren Mercedes driver said he did his utmost to deliver speed and spectacle - and was given a terrific reception by a huge crowd.

He said: "I was pushing all the way. I started in 19th so all I could do was try my best.

"The crowd were with me all the way and it's been the best race in terms of a show, and with the crowd, and it's been the best race in Formula One for a long, long time.

"I enjoyed it, regardless of how well or bad we're doing.

"It was only when I was on my own that I could have a bit of fun. I tried to show my appreciation on the formation lap and I had a little bit of fun and the team were moaning a little bit, but we live to fight another day."
