Porsche reportedly had plans to enter Formula One back when the sportscar-maker was being merged into the Volkswagen Group.
With its rich endurance racing history, Porsche was obviously keen on Le Mans at the time, but apparently feared that its new VW bosses would instead give its exclusive backing to Audi.
Porsche's Plan B was reportedly to return to the world of F1 in some or other form — it had provided engines to McLaren in the 1980s and even entered its own cars in the 1950s and 1960s.
Obviously, Porsche's fears were unfounded, since VW seemed happy enough to back both Porsche and Audi in Le Mans.
