Land Cruiser — anybody that does not recognize that name or have visions of boxy, tough-looking off-road vehicles has probably never even left their house in the past 60 years. For that’s how long Toyota’s iconoic four-wheel drive has been traveling some of the toughest and harshest roads (and non-roads) on this planet.

They have been getting more and more stylish over the years, but the true go-anywhere toughness has not suffered as a results

A new generation Land Cruiser Prado was unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show and selected models form this range will be coming to South Africa in the next two months, Toyota say.

They will be offered worldwide as a five- or three-door models powered by an upgrade three-litre, D-4D diesel engine, a 2.7-litre, 2TR-FE petrol engine or a four-litre, V6 Dual VVT-i petrol engine.

We couldn't particularly care more about the rest of the specs — just hand over the keys to test vehicle now, Toyota. Please.

For the sake of being thorough, we'll include some more mouth-watering details.

The body frame rigidity has been increased by 11 percent and frame-to-body mounts have been further insulated to reduce engine and road noise.

The front and rear suspension have been revised "for extra comfort and steering feel", Tyoyota says, adding that 'top grade' models have a new electronic system that adjusts the front and rear anti-roll bars for the best on and off-road performance.

There's also variable suspension and ride characteristic controls with a choice of three damper settings. The rear air suspension is auto-levelling, too.

Probably the most innovative feature that we've seen in a 4x4 in a long time is Toyota's "Crawl Control" that provides five settings to tackle extreme conditions — such as thick, wet clay, or mud or sand — without the driver having to use the throttle or brake pedals.

Comfortable seating for seven is in three rows. With a range of folding and sliding options that would likely make it possible to fit in various animals, packages and passengers with speed and ease.

Life in the bush doesn't have to be without a little luxury either. Top models have a 14-speaker surround sound system, delivering 7.1 channel sound from compatible CDs and DVDs. To make sure those tune are crisp and sweet, an 11-channel, 605W amplifier drives the system and the navigation system’s hard disc drive can be used to storing up to 2000 MP3 tracks.

No word on prices yet, but we'll be doing a little digging and cajoling with the Toyota people.
