Nissan has gone all out to take on the small SUV market and has built a new X-Trail range for 2010 with enhanced features.
Nissan says it is delivering a vehicle that is "precisely what a compact SUV is all about – a no compromise 'best of both' alternative".
Over 18 p;000 X-Trails now roam the roads and Nissan relied on feedback from these owners in making its design and engineering decisions for the new model.
It says the result is "a completely new spec model bearing little resemblance, bar the rugged styling of this authentic SUV, to previous" incarnations of the X-Trail.
LE models
Top-of-the-range LE models - the 2.5-litre petrol and two-litre diesel – have smooth-shifting, six-speed automatic transmission as a standard.
The cabin fittings are very upmarket and a number of enhancements have been made to the vehicle technology, such as drive-away door locking and telescopically-adjustable steering and of an auxiliary audio input for iPods.
SE models
The mid-range SE model is virtually an all-new vehicle. Leather upholstery is an option and cruise control, telescopic steering-column, MP3 player input, automatic door-locking and all-wheel–drive are standard.
The advanced drive system incorporates descent control and ABLS (Active-Brake-Limited-Slip) to improve traction and control.
The SE is available with a 2.5-litre petrol engine and six-speed manual transmission or two-litre diesel with automatic.
XE models
Finally, the entry-level XE has been revised with 16-inch alloys and upgraded cabin finishes.
The compact 2.0-litre diesel engine in the XE was put to the test. Two XE's crossed South Africa at its widest point - a combined total of more than 2000km - each on less than a single tank of fuel. That, according to Nissan, equals a fuel consumption of under 5l/100km.

Philip Devine finds himself captivated by the Legacy and its softened response.
There is no such thing as too outrageous when it comes to Bentley.
A blind artist teased us with glimpses of the all-new S60 - now Volvo bares all.
