Mercedes has three new additions to its model range comprising seven engines, two drive concepts and three suspension variants, with numerous options for wheel and tyre combinations and paint and cabin finishes.
Perhaps the most remarkable fact about the new E200 CGI, E250 CDI and E350 CDI is the marque's 'BlueEFFICIENCY' technology, which is a package from its development engineers that reduces weight, aerodynamic drag, rolling resistance and optimises engine technology to make the E-Class extremely energy efficient.
It all adds up
This, Mercedes claims, is the key to a 23 percent reduction in fuel consumption for these vehicles.
Mercedes says in a statement: "From the power steering to fuel pump, to the alternator, the development engineers scrutinised a wide range of components to determine if and how lightweight designs, new forms, more efficient control or enhanced functioning could be employed to save fuel. Although many of the individual measures only improved fuel economy by the odd percentage point or two, together they add up to a substantial saving."
More function
The German manufacturer has also opted for a cabin with fewer switches but more functions.
The controller on the centre tunnel in the new E-Class makes a range of functions available. It is linked to the display on the fascia and operates the navigation system, car radio, telephone, DVD player and other components of the infotainment system. A twelve-button, multifunction steering wheel also simplifies the need for more control interfaces.
Mercedes say: "As well as being simple, precise and intuitive, the buttons need to be a pleasure to use and stir the emotions. The exquisite integration of the switches and buttons into the interior design concept was just as important as the pleasant feeling of touching the control surfaces or the soft "click" heard when pressing the buttons."
