The E63 AMG is now beefier and more exhilarating to drive, but still practical enough that you can use it for everyday motoring. At least that's what Mercedes claims.

Tests on the tar will ultimately prove how practical it is. That fact aside, it remains a remarkable piece of machinery, taking on technological and engineering enhancements gained from the production of the SL 63 AMG.

The E63 highlights include an AMG, 6.3-litre V8 engine, newly-developed suspension with electronically controlled damping, new front axle and with restyled exterior and cabin.

Plenty of power

The engine should leave nobody wanting for power with its output of 386kW and torque of 630Nm. Its water-cooling system is a new design and will even hold up to the enormous dynamic stresses experienced on a racetrack.

Acceleration from zero to 100 km/h can be achieved in 4.5 seconds, with an electronically-limited, top speed of 250km/h.

Power is delivered to tar through 18-inch alloys shod with 255/40 R18 tyres at the front and 285/35 R18 at the rear. A set of four 360-millimetre, internally ventilated and perforated discs provide all thre force needed to bring the rolling wheels to a controlled stop.

The car also takes on the SL63's seven-speed sports transmission, which does away with a conventional torque converter and uses a compact, wet start-up clutch.

Not thirsty

All this extra power does not come with a thirst for fuel. Mercedes has instead reduced fuel consumption for the car to a claimed 12.6l/100km, which is nearly 12 percent below the previous model.

The new sports suspension makes use of steel spring struts on the front axle and air springs on the rear. This makes the front sensitive to input while the rear and its automatic level-control system keep the vehicle at a constant no matter what the load.

The damping system also responds to driving style and reduces roll to provide a comfortable ride while still retaining its sport agility.

Wider ride

The body has been widened in its makeover by adding a little extra to the wings and increasing the size of the air intakes. Tinted headlights, side sill panels, a rear apron with a black insert and chromed, twin tailpipes complete the look.

The cabin has electrically adjustable sports seats and a sports steering wheel with shift paddles. Leather upholstery is standard and pedals are brushed stainless steel.

To ensure that both driver and this powerful car remain safely on the road, Mercedes-Benz offers a dynamic-driving training course at the Zwartkops Racetrack to E63 AMG customers.
