Lexus has added a second coupe-convertible to its range that to keep the SC430 company. South Africa’s most satisfying car to own (according to J.D. Power and Associates), the IS250 sedan, now has a folding hardtop.

The new model shares only the headlights, bonnet, door handles, and side mirrors with the IS250. Its folding roof has the fastest mechanism in its segment and also provides maximum luggage space, whether in use or folded down. The aluminium roof uses 13 motors and 33 sensors to smoothly and silently converts from coupe to convertible in just 21 seconds.

Lexus SA general manager Kevin Flynn says: "Four-seater convertibles are all about lifestyle, but importantly, these cars require real-world practicality in their pursuit of style".

Muscular

The front overhang on the model has been increased by 15mm improve aerodynamics when driving with the top down. The IS250C has a muscular shape that flows strongly to the rear, where it is "punctuated" by new combination light clusters.

In the cabin, the low profile front row is heated and extra comfort for top-down driving is provided by heating pads at shoulder height, improved heater performance and ventilation airflow.

The two full-size seats in the back row have ample legroom and are separated by a centre console with cupholders. The doors have been lengthened by 300mm to provide easier access to the back row and the front seats have a one-touch "walk-in" button that automatically folds and slides the seat forwards.

The 19th hole

A bigger rear overhang makes for 553 litres of space in the boot with the top up and 205 litres when it is stowed away. Lexus says this is the only car in its class that where a nine-inch golf bag will fit in the boot with the hard top stowed and the luggage cover in place.

The climate control system has been configured for top-down driving with the addition of a speed sensitive control that automatically adjusts outlet temperature and air flow speed.

The satnav and audio controls have been revised and the eight-speaker sound system gains has been tuned to adapt to the loss of bass when the roof is stowed.

The convertible uses the IS250's 2.5-litre, V6 engine and six-speed automatic transmission. Power output is 153kW at 6400rpm and 252Nm at 4800rpm.
