Mahindra SA has launched a new Scorpio range, consisting of nine model derivatives.

Starting from R157 900, the range now also includes a six-speed automatic transmission available in the top-of-the-line SUVs. Mahindra has also launched its new model range with a host of new safety features, including ABS and airbags, which are available as standard on all models except the workhorse Scorpio Pik-Up 2.5 TCI Single Cab

It is, however, available as an option on the model.

New features also include a redesigned front grille, headlights and bumpers, electric rear view mirrors and an integrated 2 Din audio system.

Dual airbags and ABS are standard. This is available as an optional feature on the workhorse Scorpio Pik-Up 2.5 NEF TCI 4x2 SC. The top end SUV with automatic transmission is also equipped with a transponder-based immobiliser security system.

Mahindra products are extensively tested before launch in different parts of the world for real world usage. In South Africa, vehicles have been extensively tested at Gerotek for durability and reliability.

The smooth-shifting automatic transmission used in the flagship Scorpio SUVs provides a host of advantages, including lower noise levels, better gradeability and a more comfortable drive.

It has a normal and a 'winter' mode, designed for use on slippery road conditions to avoid high torque at the wheels at start up. The control unit on this transmission also automatically detects gradient and uses an appropriate shift schedule for suitable driveability.

When the Engine Brake Mode is activated in extreme downhill conditions, the transmission will select the lowest possible gear for that speed. A 4x4 low-range is also available for extreme off-road conditions.

The new Scorpio's exterior is complemented by impressive power under the bonnet. The mHawk diesel engine is what makes the Scorpio the powerhouse that it is, Mahindra claim. It propels the Scorpio from 0 to 60 km/h in 5.7 seconds.

The 2.2-litre, 4-cylinder mHawk CRDe engine that powers the automatic derivatives has 87kW of power at 4000 rpm and an impressive 270Nm over a broad range between 1600 and 2800 rpm. The 2nd generation Bosch Common Rail system with solenoid injectors intelligently manages fuel supply to the engine.

The manual models in the Scorpio range are powered by the proven NEF 2.5-litre, 4-cylinder turbo diesel engine that delivers 74kW of power at 3800rpm and 258Nm at 1800rpm.

The range has a redesigned front grille, wrap-around bumpers and a new bonnet scoop – giving it a muscular stance. Multi-reflector headlights and new fog lamps are part of the new package.

The cabins of the Scorpio SUV and Pik-Ups has "new ergonomically designed seats" with variable density foam, a new-look gear shift and a lots of storage space. Can- and cup-holders, multi-utility spaces, a map pocket and a spacious glove box.

Other comforts include power steering, electric windows, an electric fuel lid opener, electrically operated rear view mirrors, a defogger, a cellphone holder and mobile charging points for front and middle row seats.

Audio controls are on the steering wheel, as is cruise control on the automatic models.

Mahnidar says these features enhance the Scorpio's appeal, dynamic performance and ride quality, ensuring an effortless ride.

One of the SUV's key features is that it can accommodate up to eight people in three separate rows. It also has a sliding middle row in the 8-seater and second row captain seats in the 7-seater.
