Meet the world's first hybrid sportscar.
Honda's all-new CR-Z replaces the CR-X in a albeit slightly smaller VW Scirocco rival in what is expected to be a 100kW, petrol-electric hybrid capable of a 9 second 0-100km/h dash.
Combined fuel consumption is a claimed 4l/100km and carbon dioxide emissions are expected to be below 100g/km .
Using a one-litre, i-VTEC petrol engine mated to an electric-motor and powered by a nickel metal hydride battery pack rather then the latest lithium ion cells, the system will drive a six-speed manual trasnsmission rather than the traditional hybrid CVT or automatic fare.
CR-Z will ride on a shortened Insight platform but with a wheelbase that is 12cm shorter.
It was unveiled at the Tokyo show on Wednesday and the production version is expected to make its debut at the Detroit show next January. All being equal, it should reach South Africa sometime in 2010.
