Audi's electric sports car, the e-tron concept, has been confirmed for production. Enter the R4.

While the new R4 is aimed at being green and clean fun, speculation is that it is likely to have petrol-powered siblings with engines from the current TT lineup, slotting neatly into the gap between TT and R8.

The R4 is likely to be developed with Audi's VW stable mate, Porsche. This family venture indicates that the R4 will share a chassis with the coming generation of Boxters and Caymans.

Back to the green R4. The model tipped to be the top of the range. Drive will be provided to all four wheels by not two, but four electric motors. Two motors for each axle, powered in turn by the lithium-ion battery pack, will give the R4 approximately 220kW and a phenomenal 4500Nm of torque. That sounds electric in more ways than one.

Going from standstill to 100km/h is expected to be achieved in under seconds and the R4 should have a top speed of 225km/h, all with zero emissions. The battery will provide a range of 250km.

It will weigh in at a mere 1500kg thanks to its spaceframe setup and plastic paneling and should hit showrooms in 2012.
