The 356 isn't the only model Porsche wants to pluck out of history. The 928 is coming back, too.
The company plans to resurrect the model in the next few years and it is set to sit between the 911 and four-door Panamera in its future range.
The Panamera-based newcomer will allow Porsche to take a swipe at he likes of the Ferrari 599 GTB, Bentley's Continental GT and the Aston Martin DB9.
With three doors and a short-wheelbase ? in essence a full-sized GT 928 ? it will overcome the 911's load-hauling restrictions with a 320-litre boot accessed by a hatchback like the Panamera's.
928's two-plus-two seating set-up however, will allow for a far sleeker rear treatment than the family favourite Panamera. It will also use its sibling's 4.8-litre, V8 that delivers 300kW and 375kW, with the likely addition of a V10 later. Like the Panamera, the new 928 will offer all-wheel drive in its top model.
It will also share the Panamera's hybrid drivetrain ? an Audi S4-sourced, 275kW, 3-litre supercharged V6 coupled to a 38kW electric motor for hot-hatch fuel economy while still delivering Porsche performance.
Priced between the 911 and Panamera, expect the new 928 sticker to begine at around one million rand and stretch to just over R1.5-million to seriously undercut its Ferrari and Aston Martin rivals when it arrives in 2012.
