I have witnessed cars being promoted for many purpouses, but Renault is the first to tout its upcoming electric vehicle as a 'Spa' on wheels.
I suppose it's a logical step. During my morning run to work there is what appears to be an endless stream of cars with female occupants that are applying their makeup and styling their hair as they drive. I prefer it when they are passengers, but I have seen a woman putting on mascara with one hand and brushing her hair with the other, all the while using her knees to steer. Beauty has a steep price, eh.
Still, that shouldn't stop Renault's electric concept car, the Zoe ZE, from making it big in the world of fashion. The car maker has teamed up with L'Oreal's skin care company Biotherm to ensure that driving this car leaves you feeling perky and healthy. Though you'll have to wait until at least 2012 to enjoy the privilege.
Renault is quick to point out that the Zoe is suitable for both sexes – as long as you want to end up feeling youthful and refreshed.
The car, which is 100-percent electric driven, can be charged from a standard socket in 4 to 8 hours or fast-charged at special stations. A battery exchange at these stations will allow drivers to change the electrical cells of the car in just 3 minutes if they are really in a rush.
It has a roof that acts as an intelligent membrane to insulate against heat and cold and generates energy using honeycomb photovoltaic cells. A shield of polyurethane gel at the front and back acts as a second skin that protects vulnerable parts of the body in the event of mild impact.
Biotherm's research team says the systems in the car have been specifically designed to offer the following benefits:
Skin hydration: The air conditioning system has been redesigned to maintain appropriate moisture levels in the cabin air and prevent skin from drying out.
Pollution protection: A toxicity sensor and particulate filters that close air vents if needed to deliver pollution-free ai to the cabin.
Essential oils system: A system diffuses essential oils into the cabin – just like at a health spa – as mood enhancers. The idea is to leave you feeling energetic and on the go in the morning, relaxed on your way home and alert when driving at night.
While you wait for your spa on wheels to materialize, you can test out Renault's other electric vehicles, which are expected to launch a year earlier than the Zoe.
