Rising fuel prices and social pressure have made even the most bold of motoring enthusiasts acutely aware of one fact: While it is remains appropriate to own a sports car if you have the means, it is no longer proper to use it for every single driving mission.
How then, does one tone things down without having to slum it, so to speak?
Aston Martin may have the answer. Its Cygnet concept car is a move towards a rarely-considered form of transport: the luxury commuter car.
Small in size, big in stature
The Cygnet is a bold display of Aston Martin?s core design and engineering values, but this time with an environment-friendly twist.
The company plans to offer commuters greater freedom without compromising on the design, quality and innovation that embody the brand.
Aston Martin chief executive Ulrich Bez said: "Many of our customers have a need for a small car for urban and city use. The Cygnet Concept brings intelligence, innovation and artistry to the small car market. [It] represents the natural choice for those customers looking for a premium commuter car."
Attention to detail
The concept is also a demonstration of Aston Martin's skill at creating hand-crafted interiors. A blend of hand-stitched leather, Alcantara and aluminium in the cabin links the vehicle with the company's top sports cars.
Aston says its luxury commuter car can slip easily and unobtrusively (ahem) into the city and uses tried and tested technology to provide a genuine solution for future mobility.
