Henry Ford once declared that customers could have their car in any colour they wanted as long as it was black… And judging by the popularity of the Model T, customers clearly didn't mind.

SAAB has taken this very approach with their Turbo X, and once again it seems unlikely to lessen the appeal of the car. Created to celebrate three decades of the Swedish marque's work in turbocharging, this limited edition model alludes to the lineage of SAABS's iconic "Black Turbos".

The original black 900 Turbo combined alluring looks with surging performance. The Turbo X celebrates this heritage (paying homage to their forebears by sporting metallic jet black paint finish) but with a showcase of the latest in automotive technology.

Available in two body styles (9-3 saloon or SportCombi) the limited edition features a front shod with a deeper lip spoiler and integrated air intake vents that helps reduce drag. The rear has a re-profiled bumper and lower insert panel as well as a new rear spoiler designed to reduce lift.

The exterior detailing is accentuated by a matt grey titanium-like finish, while in the cabin, leather-bound sports seats are complemented by the carbon-fibre finish around the main facia and door inserts.

The Turbo X is equipped with SAAB’s XWD system, which distributes torque between the front and rear axles to improve grip. Under the bonnet is a high revving 24-valve 2.8-litre V6 turbo engine, which provides the saloon with a claimed 0-100km/h sprint time of less than 5.5 seconds and topping out at an electronically limited 250km/h.

But the jury is still out on whether this limited edition will make its way to South Africa…
