Four toll gates on the N1 highway between Pretoria and Polokwane raked in more than R15-million over the Easter long weekend, Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele revealed on Wednesday.
In a written reply to a parliamentary question, he said the net revenue received by the SA National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) from the Carousel, Pumulani, Kranskop and Nyl "mainline plazas" amounted to R15.5-million.
This was for the period 5 April to 10 April.
The toll gates are operated by concessionaire Bakwena.
According to the minister's reply, the best day was 5 April, when R4.1-million was taken in tolls. The second best day was Easter Sunday (9 April), when net toll revenue amounted to R3.5-million.
Over R6-million of the total for the period was taken at the Carousel toll plaza.
