The driver of Sasolburg's mayor was arrested after he was forced to stop by Free State traffic cops while driving at 235km/h on the N1, the Volksblad newspaper reported on Tuesday.

Driver Elliot Sefatsana, a former traffic officer, was speeding in Mayor Brutus Mahlaku's white Mercedes-Benz near the Verkeerdevlei toll gate.

The newspaper said traffic officials reportedly wanted to stop the speeding vehicle, but that Sefatsana switched on the vehicle's blue lights and continued to speed away.

The authorties eventually stopped him 30 kilometres further along.

Sefatsana's told them he was speeding because Mahlaku was late for a meeting with Free State Premier Ace Magashule.

He was arrested and was later released on bail of R1000.

Municipal spokesperson Gino Alberts confirmed that the mayor had a meeting with the premier, the Volksblad reported.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Fikiswa Matoti said Sefatsana would appear in court again on 28 August 2012.
