The Western Cape Traffic Department said that more than R170 000 worth of fines were issued during the course of the weekend.
Traffic Chief Kenny Africa said 24 roadblocks were conducted with more than 3000 motorists being pulled over.
He said more than half of them were tested for drunk driving.
"Some 1600 drivers were tested for alcohol. We arrested 17 drunken drivers who were driving under the influence."
Africa said over 1700 drivers were caught speeding.
"The total amount of fines that we issued came to the value R176 800."
