An emergency room doctor was reportedly drunk and high when she slammed her SUV into traffic in Massachusetts.

Kristen Howard, who was named Doctor of the Year at Newtown-Wellesley Hospital in 2009, can be seen speeding her vehicle over a grass verge straight into traffic on a surveillance video.

The 56-year-old was reportedly wearing her hospital scrubs and smelled of alcohol when she exited the wrecked SUV. She sustained broken ribs and major bruising.

An unlucky Paul McDonald (78) bore the brunt of the accident, and said: "It was like a bomb went off in the car; that's really all I remember... I was in total shock".

"When she exited the car she was unsteady, and was lethargic," added McDonald.

According to the police report, Howard backed over a fence twice, hit a van, and tried to flee the scene of the parking lot.

She has been relieved of her hospital duties pending a probe.
