There was a time when the Lexus brand was closely linked to Toyota name in South Africa, perhaps relying on the former's credibility. Today Lexus stands alone, with the likes of the new RX carrying the premium SUV crossover (XUV) genre to new heights.
The RX brand in particular helped usher in the now-popular crossover segment with handling, comfort and ride on a par with most cars. Sharper styling now comes with a longer wheelbase, larger interior and more luxury.
Remote Touch
New to the RX350 is "Remote Touch", offered in such a way you need not be a rocket scientist to operate it. I actually worked the procedures out after a short stint, navigating through system and modes via the central 'haptic' controller and enter-button.
Like a PC mouse, it moves the pointer on the screen, which snaps to an icon when it nears a selection. Press the "Enter" switch and the function is selected. Simple!
Impressive
The cabin has an air of smart sophistication about it and you're prepared for this the moment you open the front doors via the touch sensitive handles. When you again drive the vehicle the seat automatically adjusts to its original position when the engine is started.
Ride comfort is top-draw, but more impressive is the road holding. Response to steering-wheel inputs are quick, to the point that when you throw it into an oncoming bend, reaction is positive, with no nervousness and little roll.
