Peugeot took pole position for the Le Mans 24 Hour race after Stephane Sarrazin's time, set on Wednesday, couldn’t be topped during the second and final evening of qualifying on Thursday.

With the time of 3:26.344 unbeaten, Allan McNish managed to drive his Audi R10 to the fastest time of the evening. Clocking 4:01.257, he was followed by Lucas Luhr in the Audi Sport Team Joest car who covered the track in 4:01.629.

Sebastien Bourdais was the fastest Peugeot driver on Thursday, clocking 4:01.928 in the pole-sitting No. 8 car.

But Peugeot's No. 7 car spent the final 90 minutes of the session at the side of the track after Marc Gene drove the car into the barriers at Arnage, damaging the car's front.

Contributing to the accident, and the slower lap times, was the damp track — drenched by heavy rains earlier in the evening, before the two-hour final qualifying session took place.

Also coming a cropper were the Luc Alphand Adventures Gt1 Corvette C5-R, the Guillaume Moreau-piloted No. 13 Courage LC70 LMP1, and the No. 31 Team Binnie Lola LMP2.

With the Team PSI GT1 spinning for the second time within 30 minutes, the session was ended five minutes early.

Fastest of the GT1 entries on the night was the 009 works Aston Martin driven by Rickard Rydell around the circuit in 4:29.918.

The top five cars on the grid are as follows:
1. Lamy, Sarrazin, Bourdais, Peugeot 908 Hdi FAP (No 8), 3:26.344
2. Capello, Kristensen, McNish, Audi R10 TDI (No 2), 3:26.916
3. Gene, Minassian, Villeneuve, Peugeot 908 Hdi FAP (No 7), 3:27.724
4. Bila, Pirro, Werner, Audi R10 TDI (No 1), 3:28.301
5. Luhr, Rockenfeller, Premat, Audi R10 TDI (No 3), 3:29.736
